A GUIDE TO THE MOST COMMON EXTERIOR DOOR MATERIALS

Exterior doors are an important part of your family home – they set the tone and establish the look and feel of the home, as well as providing insulation and security. Exterior doors can come in a variety of different materials, so it’s important to know what the choices are so you can determine what’s right for you.

Timber

Timber is the traditional choice for exterior doors – it’s simple and classic and there’s an option to suit all different styles of homes. There are many types of wood to choose from, and they can be treated in a variety of ways – with paint, stains and shapes tailored to your personal style and needs.

While timber doors look great, they come with some challenges. Wood can lose its lustre over time – warping, chipping, fading, or peeling – and this can be exacerbated by exposure to the elements. This wear and tear means you’ll likely be up for some ongoing maintenance (such as repainting) in order to keep your door looking good.

Solid timber doors are also often quite an expensive option, so can cost prohibitive for some buyers.

Steel

Steel doors are often praised for their security, low maintenance and versatility. They can be made into a range of different styles and colours and are usually less expensive than timber doors.

While steel doors are very strong, and are therefore unlikely to bend or warp, they can be dented and are prone to rust.

Aluminium

Aluminium front doors provide a low-maintenance option for those on the hunt for a door that’s cost-effective and durable. The aluminium structure provides stability, strength, and security, and you can take your pick of a range of sleek looks and designs.

The addition of a powder coat makes these doors very low maintenance and perfect for doors that will be exposed to harsh weather, as they won’t move or bow.

Composite Fibreglass

Insulated composite fibreglass doors are made from composite materials. They have many advantages, including being strong, durable, and low maintenance.

The appetite for composite fibreglass doors is on the rise given their many benefits, as well as the ability to take on a wood-like façade, while eliminating all the typical wood risks, such as warping or rotting. Unlike steel doors, they won’t dent or rust. Their wood-mimicking finishes are believable and beautiful and many staining and painting options are available. This durability makes fibreglass doors perfect for entrances that are exposed to extreme weather.

Composite fibreglass doors can be susceptible to fading, but other than that, they are a great option for people looking for a front door that has the best of both worlds.
