What Is A Rebated Pair Of Doors?

In joinery terms, rebate refers to the overlap of the meeting stiles of two doors when they are closed. When a pair of doors is rebated, draughts, noise, and heat transfer are reduced. Furthermore, it increases the security of your pair of doors since they’re nearly impossible to open from the other side – especially if they’re also locked.

Rebated door pairs open and close independently. However, a rebated door pair has a primary or lead door and secondary door or slave door. The rebate means that the primary door can open and close freely but it can’t close completely without the secondary door being shut.

Careful consideration must be given so the correct door opens the correct way. The options are:

Right Hand Open In

Left Hand Open In

Right Hand Open Out

Left Hand Open Out
